Frequently asked questions about the Prairie Inn Harriers
What do I do after I join?
First, you'll be added to our email list and newsletter distribution list, so you'll always be up-to-date on club activities. There are many levels at which you can participate in the club. There's no obligation to attend club events, but the Harriers are a very active presence in the running community (for example, Harriers make up about 50% of the Royal Victoria Marathon race committee) so there's always something to do to contribute.
How many PIH members are there?
PIH averages over 300 paid members each year. See the membership list for details.
Can I just come along, or do I have to join?
There is no need to join at first. Just come along to our club runs or to a meeting or a race or a social event and see if you like it. You can decide later if you want to join.
Will everyone be faster than me? Should I wait 'til I'm faster?
No: we have runners of all abilities, so there will be someone who runs at around your speed, whether you run 30 minutes for 10K or over 60. We even have members who don't run at all, who walk for fitness. You can come along right away. And a good way to become a better runner is to join up with a running club.
I am visiting Victoria for a few days or a few weeks. Can I run with you? Will it cost anything?
You will be very welcome to come along to any of our club runs and you certainly don't need to pay anything! Contact us for more information.
Where are you?
We are based in Victoria. Our runs take place in various location in the Greater Victoria area. Some of our favourite running routes are Thetis Lake, Beaver Lake, Cedar Hill Golf Course and the Galloping Goose trail. Check out the club runs page for up-to-date schedules and information.
How far do you run? How fast?
Our Satuday runs at Thetis Lake are about an hour. Cedar Hill Golf Course is about 20 minutes per lap, and you can run as many laps as you like! Beaver Lake has a 10K trail. We typically have one group that runs 7:00 - 8:00 per mile and one that runs 9:00 - 10:00 per mile.
What sort of people are members? Are you all old men?
We have members of all ages from all walks of life. All old men? Harrier women's relay teams like the Hellions and the Rockettes are well known throughout the running community, as much for their spirit as for their athletic accomplishments!
What are the benifits of joining?
Club members can receive a 10% discount on purchases from local running stores, discounts on race entry fees, subsidized club uniforms, a professionally produced quarterly newsletter, and, most importantly, the chance to participate in some of the Harriers activities in the running community: Running in races, running on relay teams, organizing races, supporting races with volunteers and equipment, organizing and conducting running clinics, and having a good time at social events.
