CLUB INFORMATION AND HISTORY
The PRAIRIE INN HARRIERS (PIH) is the largest organized running club in Victoria and one of the largest in B.C. The club was founded in 1978 by Alex Marshall, Robin Pearson and the late Bruce "Gunner" Shaw. PIH is a member in good standing with B.C. Athletics and the Vancouver Island Runners' Association. The club was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1982 with the stated purposes:
a) To encourage participation in running for fitness, fun and competition; and
b) To organize and promote mass participation running events and educational and public awareness for the purposes of a) above. |
CLUB MEMBERSHIP & MEETINGS
Today the club has hundreds of members covering the full spectrum of running and walking abilities from the recreational jogger to the elite competitive runner. Family memberships allow group involvement of all family members for a reduced membership fee.
We encourage potential new members to join us at our training runs, races, meetings, Annual Awards Night and our Annual General Meeting where new officers are elected for the upcoming year.

CLUB BENEFITS
PIH members enjoy a number of benefits by belonging to the club. The following are Harriers features:
n CURRENT NEWS - The Harriers website lists race results, upcoming fixtures, club runs, social functions, photo albums, runners' profiles and other articles of interest to runners and walkers.
n COMMUNICATIONS - Information on current events, races, training sessions and social gatherings are provided regularly on our website, by email announcements, by phone and text messages. Our popular website, pih.bc.ca is one of the finest running club sites with many visitors daily.
n TEAM PARTICIPATION AND CLUB UNIFORMS Events, such as relays, inter-club challenges, marathons and the Island Race Series encourage team entries. A wide assortment of PIH garments including club singlets, t-shirts, jackets, shorts and accessories are available. Please contact the Club Registrar for an inventory of PIH club uniforms and racing singlets.
n HARRIERS MEETINGS - The club meets semi-annually to discuss a wide range of topics including race reports and social functions. Entry forms, information and race results are available at these meetings.
n SOCIAL EVENTS - An Annual Awards Night in January, a family picnic/barbecue in August and other theme parties throughout the year are included in the social activities of the club.
n WILDERNESS RUNS - Frequently different club members lead runners through a variety of interesting routes generally followed by brunch at a nearby pub or restaurant. Many runs feature spectacular trail wilderness scenery. Check the website for a complete list and schedule of different club runs.
n RACE EQUIPMENT - The club has excellent equipment for timing, course marking and finish chute set up for any race. It is available for rent to other running clubs and events.
n HISTORIC INFORMATION - Race results, runner profiles and photographs of most club members are contained in over eighty binders of the club's archives dating back to when the Harriers were founded in 1978.

n RACE DIRECTION - The Harriers actively host and organize several major running events in Greater Victoria including the following 2022 dates:
Assistance and expertise from the club is provided to many other significant races in Victoria and on Vancouver Island such as the Vancouver Island Race Series, the Times Colonist 10K, the Goddess Run, Douglas Mile, Sidney by the Sea 5K/8K and the Royal Victoria Marathon, Half Marathon and 8K Road Race.
n RACE PARTICIPATION - Club members regularly participate in the 2022 Vancouver Island Race Series.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
CHARITABLE SUPPORT - The Prairie Inn Harriers support a number of charitable organizations and races throughout the year.
HARRIERS FOUNDATION: In 1996, a Foundation was established to raise funds for local community and charitable causes. Scholarships, bursaries, travel assistance for athletes/teams and donation of a memorial bench have been funded. Over $560,000 has been raised to date to support the 116 Harriers Foundation projects including eight major scholarships at the University of Victoria and Camosun College and $16,700 to assist The Land Conservancy to purchase private land for increasing parks within the Capital Regional District.
