This morning, March 22, was a lovely morning for a 5K run in Esquimalt. I turned 55 yesterday and decided 3 weeks ago to celebrate by signing up for the Frontrunners 7th Annual LifeMark Health Esquimalt 5K Fun Run – and fun it was indeed. We were greeted with heated washroom facilities in the Archie Browning Recreation Centre and ample space to park. Pre-race coffee was available at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. They made some changes to the course this year; I heard that the start line was moved back a bit to make it an officially sanctioned race. It was slightly undulating after the half way point with beautiful park-like and beach scenery after that. The last kilometre seemed to fly by with an encouraging crowd for all finishers. The volunteers were super, and water was available for everyone immediately after the event. The awards, prizes and refreshments were in the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, which even had chairs for the awards ceremony! There was also a bottomless cup of coffee available. They had awards for the top 3 females and males and also for the female 60 plus category. Gary Duncan and Nick Walker raced very well, being the top runner in the M50-59 and M30-39 age categories respectively. The overall winners were UVic's Kyle Irvine, 15:49, and NTC's Alison Hooper, 17:43. I was pleased as I had about a 34 minute run and placed 14th out of 60 in the F50-59. It was a very nice and well organized event and I would recommend it to everyone. Link to the results -- http://racedaytiming.ca/ results/Esquimalt5K2014
