The Pioneer 8K is moving back to the Saanich Fairgrounds in Central Saanich.
We are returning the 47th Annual Harriers Pioneer 8K Road Race, part of the Vancouver Island Race Series, to its old and familiar home at the Saanich Fairgrounds after eight years in North Saanich. While that course was great, the separation from the pre- and post-race event venue was not.
We look forward to hosting all the activities related to the race in the Main Hall at the Saanich Fairgrounds. The newly designed compact race course will start and end near the hall and loop around the fairgrounds to quiet country roads to the north. Parking will be available on the fairgrounds propery and at nearby Stelly's Secondary School.
Initiated in 1980, the event has a rich history of outstanding performances attracting many Olympians and world record age category athletes. Several Canadian Records have been set at Pioneer.

High Performance Athletes
Athletes who have finished a certified 8 km road race within the last 24 months faster than, or near, a set performance standard may be eligible for a complimentary entry to the Harriers Pioneer 8K. See the attached documents for further details, information on possible travel assistance across the Strait, and the form to apply:
- 2026 Pioneer Complimentary Entry Standards and Prize Money
- 2026 Pioneer High Performance Application Form (pdf) or doc
Note that to be more equitable across all the categories the standards are based on an age-gender performance percentage. Initially set at 83% this equates to about 26:15 for open men and 28:25 for open women. For 15 year old juniors it equates to about 26:10 and 30:15. For 40 year old masters, about 26:20 and 29:35, for 55 year-olds about 29:45 and 34:10, etc. The standard may be relaxed a percent or three so do apply if approaching.
The total regular prize purse is $850, with extra event record bonuses of $500 for setting a new open men's or women's course record, currently 22:58 by Carey Nelson set in 1985, and 25:28 by Natasha Wodak set in 2013.
