Overview

(Updated July 2016)

The Harriers Youth Team is a year-round training and racing group based in Victoria, focusing on both track and field and cross country running.

The Team has about 25 members ranging from grade 8 to third-year university. This includes youth who are just starting to run to those who are competing at the national and international level. We compete here on the Island, but increasingly we have to look to races on the Mainland, other provinces or the US to get competitive races.

This past winter we competed indoors in NYC and Seattle with great success. The team posted numerous personal bests and got their first taste of racing on a 200m track. Taylor Lyman won 600m at the New Balance Games in NYC in a time that ranked him 6th on the all-time Canadian Junior list. These trips offer an opportunity to learn to race, and to run fast times in big meets. This is ideal learning to prepare them for racing at championships here in BC and at Nationals.

This spring, we have traveled to a number of track races. We raced at the Oregon Relays in April where we raced against some of the Pacific Northwest's best high school athletes on the legendary Hayward Field track. Some of the athletes also competed in Portland in May, where Tyler Dozzi and Tyler Lyman qualified for the National Juniors.  Liam Stanley traveled to Arizona for the Desert Challenge on the Athletics Canada Para Development Team. He set a national T37 800 best, that set off a series of record runs including a 4:13.51 1,500 record that currently ranks him 2nd in the World. He will be attempting to make the Paralympic Team in Edmonton to compete for the medals in Rio. This fall we are hoping to take a team to the National Cross Country Championships in Kingston.

Youth Team sponsorship opportunities are available to both individuals and businesses. A $300 sponsorship can cover the ferry, accommodations, vehicle and other travel costs for an athlete with limited means to compete in the Lower Mainland. Alternatively, a donation of air miles points or covering flight costs can get an athlete to the Nationals (Edmonton and Montreal area). The Team provides funding for meet registration and/or reducing the cost of ferries, car rentals and/or accommodations. However, air travel expenses are covered by parents, or in some instances the athletes themselves (with part-time jobs). Sponsorship can help some of our athletes attend races that they would otherwise be unable to afford.
